Retail interiors for British designer Maraget Howell’s flagship store.

This flagship store on Wigmore Street in London was designed for British designer Margaret Howell, renowned for her classic understated design of menswear, womenswear and household goods. A palette of clean, natural materials was applied in order to reflect the honest qualities of the brand. Dark plywood accentuates the floor–to–ceiling height at the front of the store and creates more of a contrast when the space opens up towards the rear of the interior.

Following the success of the flagship store, the interior for Howell’s latest store on Fulham Road was completed. Complementary to the designer’s timeless, relaxed style and commitment to traditional, pure fabrics, the Fulham Road store continued the theme of Wigmore Street in terms of materials and sense of space, creating a similar environment in which to display Howell’s collections of wonderful clothing and products.

The Fulham Road store features an enclosed mezzanine display window.

Previously housing an agnes b., the existing building featured a ground floor with a generous high ceiling with a mezzanine to the rear, and an existing basement floor, also with good ceiling height, reached via an internal metal stair. New shelving and hanging rails were inserted to both floors, and the front third of the mezzanine was enclosed to form an internal display window, with offices and staff facilities behind.

A generous sense of space defines the retail environment.

The ground floor's existing Ash timber floorboards were retained and stained dark, while a new industrial floor was introduced to the basement. The existing metal stair and columns were treated with an MIO paint finish in gunmetal and the walls were plastered and painted as a backdrop to the simple fixtures. A European Oak cash desk was fitted adjacent to the expansive shopfront window.
