Daniel Weil qualified in architecture from the University of Buenos Aires in his native Argentina in 1977. He relocated to London in the following year to study industrial design at the Royal College of Art, where he received his master’s degree in 1981.
From 1982 until 1990 Daniel designed and manufactured his own products, including the Memphis Collection of 1982 and other objects, such as the Bag Radio. During this time, his clients included Alessi, Esprit, Yamagiwa, Channel Four, Gordon Russell and Knoll. His work can be found in several permanent museum collections including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the V&A and Design Museum in London.
Daniel joined Pentagram as a partner in 1992. His projects have included: product, packaging, interiors and art direction for Swatch; packaging and concept stores for Lego; packaging for Tretorn, Superga and Pantone; CD packaging for EMI (including the Pet Shop Boys albums Very and Very Relentless); shop-in-shop environments for TSE; interiors for King’s College, London; new retail interiors for Boots’ destination and pop-in stores; flagship stores for the European telecommunications company Group G3/Quam; interiors for Granada motorway services, Á Cafe (Autogrill’s chain of European coffee bars) and Cass Art Warehouse. He has also recently created room products for One&Only luxury resorts including Le Touessrok (Mauritius) and Reethi Rah and Kanahura (both in the Maldives), as well as the new Bulgari Hotel in Milan and The Dorchester in London.
A major client over recent years has been United Airlines, America’s leading airline carrier. Daniel has designed cabin interiors, seating, tableware and amenities for first, business and economy classes, staff uniforms, check-in systems and lounges, as well as the full reconfiguration and redevelopment of United’s own terminal at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago.
Daniel was Professor of Industrial Design, Vehicle Design and Design Management at the Royal College of Art from 1991 until 1995. He was also unit master at the Architectural Association between 1982 and 1986. Currently, he is a Senior Fellow of the Royal College of Art.
